2008 TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Scholarships are open to Aboriginal people or Torres Strait Islanders, who will be completing their Higher School Certificate in 2005, including departmental employees and community members who may wish to train as teachers.

Under the program, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students who undertake a teacher education program to train as a primary teacher or a teacher in secondary teaching area are eligible to apply for a scholarship.

For students selected for a scholarship, the Department will:-

- Meet the annual cost of HECS fees for units successfully completed towards a teacher education qualification during the period of the scholarship.

- Provide a training allowance of $1,500 for each year of the scholarship to assist witht he cost of incidentals, textbooks and student administration fees; and

- Provide permanent employment as a teacher in a NSW public school in an agreed location on successful completion of studies.


Packages of material to support the promotion have been forwarded to secondary and central schools for the attention of the career's adviser.

The AEC is proud to be a sponsor of the 12th national Aboriginal Studies Association conference, Aboriginal Studies: Making the Connections, to be held at Bankstown Sports Club November 1-2 2006. The conference is hosted by the SELF Centre, Faculty of Education, University of Western Sydney, and is co-sponsored by the NSW AECG.
