AEC - Aboriginal Education Council (NSW) Inc.

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM

From 1966 to 1972 the AEC provided Incentive Scholarships for secondary Aboriginal students. In 1973 the Commonwealth took up this idea (another AEC first) and began funding the Scholarship Scheme for Aboriginal secondary students (ABSEG as it was known).

The AEC then turned its attention to supporting primary Aboriginal students, to encourage them to get to secondary schooling. Thanks to the generosity of donors and AEC sponsors, there are now 100 AEC primary scholarships awarded per year.

In 1983 the AEC funded 2 tertiary scholarships for Aboriginal students at universities. These are now known as the Ken Brindle Memorial Awards, in memory of the late Ken Brindle, who was one of the founders and a guiding light of the AEC. Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, 12 Ken Brindle Awards of $3,000 per annum are given each year.

In 2003 the AEC decided to go back to the idea of secondary scholarships to address the high drop-out rate of Aboriginal students in early secondary schooling. The scholarships of $300 per year are given in Years 8 and 9, extending into Year 10. In 2007, over 150 scholarships were allocated to students.
