2017 Nanga Mai Awards

March 28, 2017
Nanga Mai means “dreaming” in the Eora language.  The awards celebrate and recognise innovation, excellence and achievement in Aboriginal education in NSW public schools, school communities and department regional and state offices.

The AEC is delighted to once again be a major sponsor of these awards.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week for 2017 will be held between May 27-June3. This week is a celebration of the rich culture of Indigenous Australians and was established to promote and build better relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians for the benefit of all Australians.

The Theme for 2017 is “Let’s Take the Next Steps”

For further information please visit Reconciliation Australia‘s website

In 1955 it was decided to nominate Aboriginal Day as the first Sunday in July to honour Aboriginal culture. This day is now the beginning of a week of celebration.

The theme for NAIDOC Week  July 2-09, 2017 is  Our Languages Matter

The 2017 theme  aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song..

Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent at first (significant) European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages would have had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds.

Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass on.
